It appears to be a win-win situation for all involved. CompUSA will pick up 100 Computer City stores, allowing it to both expand into new markets or shut down duplicate and competitive locations. And Tandy will finally be free to concentrate on its core competency, RadioShack.Thats not a significant outlay for a move that would, in effect, put the competition out of business during a time when CompUSA is struggling to produce profits in a soft computer market.Although it may seem contradictory that CompUSA should opt to acquire more retail outlets as it works to build its more profitable, non-retail businesses, most analysts considered it a shrewd move.

Anthony Beaumont-Dark would charge in, full of fire: Let me tell you, Chancellor, that in the Midlands, where we still make things. `Oh, are you a manufacturer, Mr Beaumont-Dark? I always thought you were a stockbroker. Then Nick Budgen would come on from the Victoria Tower end. Line, length and spin; a deceptive action; pinpoint accuracy; the batsman intensely focused, watching each delivery on to the bat; a breathless hush on the Close. It says something about politics that in all the long years of Conservative government, Nick Budgen was never picked for the Treasury team, although as time went on it certainly attracted its fair share of duds and duffers. He was inconveniently right about its policies, about inflation and about our venture into the exchange rate mechanism - and on Europe and its single currency, he has been looking righter by the week. Now he is dead. I would like to believe that in todays House of Commons, there is someone as skilled and as awkward as he was in searching Chancellors out.

These great estates and surrounding landscapes were designed by notable architects, and some of the largest properties were manicured by as many as three dozen gardeners. One such house, in the shingle style, is Weatherend in Rockport, built for the John Gribbel family about 1900. In 1913 a Norwegian-born landscape architect named Hans Heistad (d. 1945), the son of a shipbuilder, was hired by Gribbel to improve the grounds around Weatherend. He divided the land around the house into garden rooms delineated by masonry walls and built tables, chairs, and benches to furnish these open-air rooms.About 1905 Heistad had been hired by Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, founded by Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903). In 1910 he was introduced to Maine while employed by the firm at Chatwold, the Joseph Pulitzer estate in Bar Harbor. He worked on many other Maine estates as well and finally moved permanently to the coast of Maine in 1913.In 1983 the late William Fisher, who grew up summering at Weatherend, was inspired to form a company he named Wcatherend[R] Estate Furniture in Rockland to design and manufacture garden furniture inspired by Heistads pieces. He hired ship-wrights to create an introductory group of seven reproductions. Today the firm has expanded its offerings to more than sixty products, some of which are interpretations based more loosely on Heistads pieces.
HERES your chance to win a fantastic collection of garden furniture worth nearly pounds 3,000. Tomorrows bank holiday is the perfect time to get into the garden and relax in the sunshine. Its also the right moment to bring out the barbecue and cook up some tasty recipes outdoors. The chairs come with green cushions and luxury matching parasol. Plus you will be given a weather cover for when theyre not in use. Fifty runners-up will get a set of fabulous recipe cards full of ideas to help liven up summer mealtimes.
At the end of the nineteenth century landscape architects were voicing strong opinions about what might be suitable for a garden seat. William Robinson wrote: It is rare to see a garden seat that is not an eyesore. And by 1918 Gertrude Jekyll offered her opinion in her book Garden Ornament that for Gardens of lesser pretension we may have wooden seats, either of hard wood or painted. The common habit of painting garden seats a dead white is certainly open to criticism. She believed a shade of gray or some very quiet tone of green were better choices. Chelsea Excentrics is a line of garden furniture the design of which is overseen by Julian Chichester. It is manufactured by Henry Hall Designs. a firm founded in San Francisco in 1989. The furniture is based on several British sources. A group of designs dating to the Victorian era is derived from pattern-book illustrations found in the library of Edward John Barrington Douglas-ScottMontaga, third Baron Montngu of Beaulieu, in Hampshire. A chair (illustrated above) and matching bench known as the Leagrave, is drawn from a design created in 1900 for a garden by Jekyll. who would have appreciated the fact that these chairs and benches are fashioned from teak, which weathers to a beautiful silvery gray.

Internet Marketing Business

August 25th, 2008

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
E-commerce today is enjoying the fastest growth rate of any business sector because, among other things, it is fast, convenient and cost-effective! Consider just a couple of examples I heard a consultant from Arthur D. Little present recently on CNBC: 1) A typical banking transaction, which costs one dollar, will only cost one cent when conducted over the Internet! 2) A typical brokers transaction, which costs $150, will only cost $6 when conducted over the Internet! Do you wonder why e-commerce, which is a direct result of Internet marketing, is experiencing explosive growth?

The Capital-Journal NORTH TOPEKA — Registrations for the North Topeka garage sale in June are now being accepted until May 1, organizers have announced. Register at Craft-ee Crafters, 1947 N. Topeka Blvd. For more information, call 233-9901.
Garage storage is an $800 million retail business thats growing 10% a year. This is the fastest-growing area in home organization and storage, said Mike Franks, director of strategic planning at OSullivan Furniture. We all own a lot of stuff, and the garage has become the overflow valve for the rest of the house. Franks said OSullivans garage storage program licensed under the Coleman brand and carried at diverse retailers such as Lowes, Target, Pep Boys and Office Depot has sold phenomenally well since launched last fall. The whole system, including worktable, pegboard and cabinets, sells for less than $1,000. But the market is also strong for higher-end lines, such as Gladiator Garageworks by Whirlpool. Sauders answer to the Coleman line, for example, is a licensed Hot Rod Garage workshop organization system.

PHOENIX — Plenty of mystique surrounds the phrase “pitchers and catchers report.” But on a team like the Oakland Athletics, where there arent any superstars making grand entrances or players denying what Jose Canseco wrote about them in his book, the day is mostly about shoes. Showing off new shoes. Trying on new shoes. Complaining the wrong shoes arrived. So it went on an overcast Saturday morning with light rain for the As at their Papago Park facility, where just as many position players have already arrived as pitchers and catchers.
SHOE shops are selling thousands of children badly fitting footwear, a report reveals. Parents feel they are getting a poor deal from stores which have axed their fitting service. The poll of 500 parents by shoe chain Brantano found more than a third of children lied their shoes fit correctly and one in five chose their own footwear - often leading to rows.

At first look, Eichhorn Jewelry store in downtown Decatur looks like hundreds of other jewelry stores in hundreds of other communities across the country with brightlylit show windows on either side of the front entrance to entice customers. On closer examination, however, its not youre typical jewelry store, it is a very special place. Patrons first impression of the 35 yearold store is “WOW!” One-hundred yearold vertical display cases with huge windows that slide up on the north wall are expertly lit to highlight eclectic groupings of jewelry. Unlike most stores, the main showcases, the ones John Eichhorn started his business with in 1965, are situated in the center of the showroom rather than along the sides and are also antiques. The floor cases are from 1929 when Keller Jewelry was located in the Eichhorn building. The diamond sorting table in a back room is a 100-year-old wooden library table that was left behind by the previous owner of the building who was also a jeweler. From the showroom one can peer down a short hall at the end of the store to the large steel door of the vault where the company places its valuable inventory every evening. The vault used to be part of the First National Bank in Adams County, which was the only one that didnt shut down in the crash of 1929.

RestaurantBUSINESS PLAN#x00A0;#x00A0;#x00A0;#x00A0;#x00A0;BUTCHER HOLLOW BAR BQ The proprietors of this new restaurant plan to take advantage of their market research, which indicates there is a great interest and very little competition in a specific area of St. Louis for a barbecue restaurant.
Take me to the river Christian Butler, late of the Adam Street club off the Strand and Baltic in Waterloo, is that man. Hes reinvented an old restaurant by the Millennium Bridge, taking it soaring upmarket; its unique selling point is that diners can gaze across the slimy, wolf-grey river, drinking in the sight of Tate Modern. Is that enough of a treat to bring people flocking? Luckily, his establishment has a second USP: it features almost exclusively ingredients and dishes from south-west England. The result is an almost unmitigated triumph. The bar is small and friendly and serves a wicked fino sherry. The restaurant is full of light and if youre lucky youll get one of the banquette-seating booths, in which you sit surrounded by mirrors and wallpaper featuring scenes of al fresco misbehaviour. My friend Sarah and I sighed over the menu; its one of the rare sort, on which you feel you could eat practically everything. Could you resist hogs pudding with honey roasted apples? Of course not (its a mild version of black pudding). Or Falmouth crab with clotted cream tart?

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND — A hotel chef here has created a dessert that could stretch the boundaries of the term excess. The 1,000-calorie dessert is a deep-fried chocolate sandwich. According to a report in The Times of London, the sandwich is made by coating two slices of white bread with chocolate sauce, dipping them in batter and deep-frying them. The concoction then is covered in sugar and more chocolate sauce and served with vanilla ice cream. The sandwiches are delicious, she claimed. Also, if we sold only fresh-fruit salads, we wouldnt have any customers.

IN the ever-changing world of business, legal intricacies are common. In fact, it is becoming ever more complex, making it challenging for executives not equipped with adequate legal knowledge. Providing solutions with an in-depth analysis of legalistic approach is one of the trainings given to graduates with legal degrees. Realising this, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysias (UKM) Faculty of Law, in collaboration with the Centre for Educational Extension (PKP) of UKM, offers a Master in Business Law (MBL). The programme is to fulfil the legal disparity of the executives in meeting the challenge of solving legal problems in an increasingly complex and dynamic international business environment.
LAWYERS who had wanted General Pinochet extradited were still trying early last week to decide what “legal steps” they could take to stop him going to Chile. For some reason I found myself thinking of the sad advertisements one used to see occasionally in the personal columns: “Public school man seeks interesting job, anything legal considered.” But of course I was confusing two different functions of the word legal. Ethical began by meaning “to do with ethics”, and only later came to mean being good. The purist in me still winces when someone says “aesthetic” when they mean “in good taste”. (Aesthetic originally meant “to do with the science of perception”, then “to do with taste”, good, bad or indifferent.) But there was never any need for legal to carry two meanings, because theres a perfectly good alternative that takes half the burden off it: lawful, a nice old word from the late Middle Ages (its parent word, law, appears to be of ancient Scandinavian origin). Everyone understands the difference between “legal business” and the “lawful business” that most of us spend our lives going about. Why couldnt those job-seekers have put “anything lawful considered”? Lawyers use lawful, too; they speak of a “lawful killing”. They dont say “a legal killing” (which, if it meant anything, would presumably refer to their fees).

Delivered Or Issued For Delivery? When determining whether a particular claim or lawsuit is covered, one avenue that must be considered is the applicable law, which can be affected by where the policy is delivered or issued for delivery.
LAW IN BUSINESSLaw governs and regulates virtually all aspects of the business process, from the right to engage in a business or trade, to the legal form of a business, to agreements for buying and selling merchandise or rendering services. Law regulates the quality of products sold and the advertising of products for sale. Law governs the employment relationship, protects business property, and taxes business income. This article explores the relationship of business and law in several of these areas.Business in the United States is regulated by federal and state laws as well as by local ordinances. State law regulating forms of business, business agreements, and some taxes is the most important. Federal law regulates such things as advertising, civil rights, and protection of such property as inventions. Local law typically regulates business hours, where one can do business (zoning), and health and safety.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Outside consultants began work this week on a $5 million computer system that has had difficulty providing timely, accurate financial and court-case information. State Auditor Clifton Scott said he has been unsuccessful in solving problems facing court clerks who began using the system in December. Oklahoma, Tulsa, Payne, Canadian, Cleveland, Comanche, Garfield and Rogers counties now are on the system. Eventually, all county court clerks are supposed to be on the system.
business computing Say you need to upgrade a half-dozen PCs in your office, or youd like to install a network connecting a new computer in your home to an existing one to share its cable modem and printer. You can do it yourself, listening to vendors who want to sell you their products or services, reading whatever you can find on the subject, and hunting down advice from those whove undertaken similar projects. Or you can ease your burden by hiring a computer consultant. Computer consultants typically specialize in one or more areas. Areas of specialization include specific categories of hardware and software; specific types of clients, such as medical or legal offices; general office automation; networking; and Web services. Most consultants target their services to businesses, but some work with home users.

Meal and snack replacement products helped participants in a German study lose weight-and keep it off. In phase one of the study, half the participants ate a control diet of 1,200 to 1,500 kcal/day (Group A); the other half ate two meal and two snack replacement products (vitamin- and mineral-fortified shakes, soups, and bars) and a 600 to 900 kcal meal containing 30 to 45 grams of protein (Group B). After 3 months, participants in Group A lost a mean of 1.5% of baseline body weight; they had no changes in their systolic blood pressure, plasma triacylglycerol, or glucose or insulin concentrations. Participants in Group B had a significantly higher weight loss-a mean of 7.8% of body weight. They also had signficantly reduced systolic blood pressure, tricylglycerol, and glucose and insulin concentrations.
Because weight control is big business, countless numbers of bogus quick weight loss plans are available. Kay Stanfill, a registered dietician at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, offers some advice on how to determine the truth about weight loss: Does the plan require that you do absolutely nothing? (Lose weight while you sleep, etc.) “Losing weight without any effort is a fantasy that we all share. But if a person is trying to be healthy, he or she will have to learn to change ingrained behaviors–namely eating and exercising habits.” Does the diet radically skew your eating habits, such as the “pineapple diet,” the “cottage cheese diet,” etc.? Diets which restrict a persons choices generally are doomed from the start. If adhered to for a long time, they cant provides sufficient nutrition. Also, “if a person restricts anything from his or her diet–you usually can bet that that will become his or her next |binge food. There is nothing like deprivation to make people crave a particular food.”

THE FINAL vacation days of summer are rapidly approaching. Traveling with pets can be great fun, but if your dog or cat hates to travel, the trip could be your worst nightmare, and hers, too. What arrangements do you need to make? Some dogs and cats do perfectly well in a boarding facility, while others do better when they stay in their own home. For a pet who will stay at home, a reliable friend or family member who can sleep over in your home is best for a dog. A cat will be OK alone for a short time with someone regularly visiting to give her food, water and some human companionship. If you dont have a friend or family member who can come do this for you, numerous bonded and insured pet sitting services are available.
The joys of flying on your birthday have been much discussed in this column: cakes, champagne and even upgrades can be laid on for the celebrant. But Kate Thorman of Oxford found that becoming 12 provided her with a Catch-22 problem. “So, on the one hand Kate is old enough to pay the adult fare, but on the other hand she is too young to travel without a paid escort,” says her exasperated father. At this point, Mr Thorman gave up and booked with another airline; then poor Kate found her birthday flight delayed by four hours at Birmingham airport. “Come back, Gorbachev, all is forgiven,” pleads Philip Robinson of Sheffield. “The last time I visited my friend in Minsk, this city was in the USSR. I flew to Moscow, took a train to Minsk, and all was well.”

They argue that, if marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and other drugs were legalized, several positive things would probably occur: (1) drug prices would fall; (2) users would obtain their drugs at low, government-regulated prices, and they would no longer be forced to resort to crime in order to support their habits, (3) levels of drug-related crime, and particularly violent crime, would significantly decline, resulting in less crowded courts, jails, and prisons (this would allow law-enforcement personnel to focus their energies on the “real criminals” in society); and the drug production, distribution, and sale would no longer be controlled by organized crime, and thus such criminal syndicates as the Colombian cocaine “cartels,” the Jamaican “posses,” and the various “mafias” around the country and the world would be decapitalized, and the violence associated with drug distribution rivalries would be eliminated. By contrast, the anti-legalization camp argues that violent crime would not necessarily decline in a legalized drug market. In fact, there are three reasons why it might actually increase. First, removing the criminal sanctions against the possession and distribution of illegal drugs would make them more available and attractive and, hence, would create large numbers of new users. Second, an increase in use would lead to a greater number of dysfunctional addicts who could not support themselves, their habits, or their lifestyles through legitimate means. Hence crime would be their only alternative. Third, more users would mean more of the violence associated with the ingestion of drugs. These divergent points of view tend to persist because the relationships between drugs and crime are quite complex and because the possible outcomes of a legalized drug market are based primarily on speculation. However, it is possible, from a careful review of the existing empirical literature on drugs and violence, to make some educated inferences.

TRANSPORTATIONTransportation systems move goods and people around the world. Physical distribution of goods is accomplished by various means: truck, railroad, airplane, ship or boat, and pipeline, or a combination of these methods. Surface and air transportation systems that are widely used to transport people include automobiles, bicycles, rail, air, ship or boat, bus, and rapid-transit systems.Railroads are a low-cost mode of transportation for large quantities of heavy and bulky items. Since rail lines are stationary, other forms of transportation move goods to
TRANSPORTATIONThe decisions a business owner must make regarding transportation of products are closely related to a number of other distribution issues. For example, the accessibility of suitable means of transportation factors into decisions regarding where best to locate a business or facility. The means of transportation chosen will also affect decisions regarding the form of packing used for products and the size or frequency of shipments made. Although transportation costs may be reduced by sending larger shipments less frequently, it is also necessary to consider the costs of holding extra inventory. The interrelationship of these decisions means that successful planning and scheduling can help business owners to save on transportation costs.
Within freight transport, railway transport rose substantially, while maritime transport dropped by a fifth. Transport of goods by railway surged by 14.9%, and the growth of road freight transport remained strong at 7%. The rapid expansion of land transport is explained by the robust domestic GDP growth and the high increase in harbour transport (10.6%). Roughly in the middle of 2006, the global growth of maritime transport eased off, which led to several quarterly decreases in the volume of this form of transport, including the first quarter of 2007, when the volume of Slovenian maritime transport fell by 19.9%. Over the past three years, the volume of road freight transport enjoyed the highest growth (by more than 50%) within freight transport (railway transport rose by 13.8%), while harbour and maritime transport rose by over 30%. Road freight transport is the main transport activity within the transport, storage, and communications sector, which has also seen the biggest expansion in the last few years. In 2006, the three main transport activities within the transport, storage, and communications sector were road freight transport, which employed 35.8% of workers in this sector, railway transport (15.2%), and the shipping industry (6.6%; both companies and sole proprietors are included, and the latter are also counted as employees). The corresponding shares of value added generated in these three branches are 23.3%, 12.0%, and 6.3%. Looking at the structure of workers employed in transport activities within the sector in 2003-2006, the highest increase of 3.2 p.p. was recorded in the share of road freight transport, while the shares of railway transport and shipping declined by 1.3 p.p. and 2.2 p.p., respectively (a similar direction and intensity of changes was also observed in the structure of value added; see graph). The number of employees in the transport segment of the transport, storage, and communications sector rose by 2,053 to 39,028. In 2006, road freight transport employed 18,807 workers, 2,425 more than in 2003. The number of workers in the forwarding industry fell by 950 to 3,445, while the number of railway workers declined by 326 to 7,985. The decline in the volume of the forwarding industry was largely caused by Slovenias entry to the EU. Data regarding both the volume of transport and the size of the activity are unfavourable in terms of sustainable development, since cargo is still largely being moved from railways to roads, rather than the other way around.

A survey of management holidays in the Wall Street Journal last week claimed that there is a Catch-22 for senior workers: “The enhanced mobility of wireless communications is making it harder for people to disconnect.” According to the report, numerous European high-flyers are spending the beach bars Happy Hour talking to colleagues back home on their mobiles. Technology, naturally, is to blame. The simultaneous arrival of the mobile phone and laptop means theres no escape. The only solution for hard-pressed senior executives is to switch their phones off and claim they are in a location too remote for a signal. But deputies remember - bosses deserve it, thats what they get paid for.

The glycemic index (GI) was first developed to guide dietary decisions for people with diabetes. The glycemic indexing of foods is an alternative method for ranking carbohydrate exchanges in foods based on their impact on blood glucose levels. The potential role of the glycemic load (GL) of foods in metabolic dysregulation and the development of obesity is of increasing research interest. Several observational and intervention studies in children and adults have reported that a low-GI diet is associated with a lower body weight when compared to a reduced-fat diet. However, other observational studies have not found GI to be related to diabetes risk. A recent study explored how GL may be applied to nutritionally promoted food items (low-fat, low carbohydrate, or low calorie). The evaluation is limited to Subway and Burger King chain restaurants, however such food options are being offered in an increasingly wider range of fast-food chains.

From action-oriented content to more efficient workflows, six pros tell how the Internet is moving design forward–both online and off Getting stock photography or illustration for last-minute editorial changes used to be a mad scramble, and logistics often ruled out getting exactly what I wanted. But with all the major stock houses online now–some with very sophisticated search engines and well-designed user interfaces–finding the stock art I need is actually enjoyable. Factor in being able to download files for immediate use or, at the least, pulling in the screen shot for FPO (eliminating the need to scan all those tiny stock book pictures), and the process couldnt be better. My favorite sites are Corbis and Newsmakers. From a production standpoint, the Internet has given me a tool for doing much better work under the same crazy deadlines. From a design standpoint, its had little effect on me. Idealistically, theres little reason it should. The Net is a very different visual medium than print, because it can incorporate sound, animation and video. But has there been an effect on design? In several ways, the answer is yes–and all are negative. Because of the explosion of Web content, design talent has been spread thin. Often, too, designers are burdened with living in both worlds–print and Web design–which presents very difficult technical problems. Just as the integration of the computer into magazine design workfiow suddenly made designers accountable as production managers and technicians, so has the Internet forced many designers to try to become bilingual. Its hard enough maintaining fluency in Quark, Illustrator and Photoshop. Adding Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash sustains the designers evolution from aesthete to technician.
A lot of designers coming to the World Wide Web started out designing for print. Although the days of wet ink and image trapping may be far behind you, wouldnt it be nice to have that same precise control over the text in a Web page that you had with printed paper? HTML gives you limited control over layout with tags such as CENTER

* Major players: Jill Van Menxel, president, and Kevin Connolly, vice president* Why golf vacations? “We saw an opportunity to fill a void in the travel industry. Travel agents in the past havent been savvy in the intricacies of golf,” says Van Menxel, a 25-year veteran of the travel industry. She cites industry statistics showing that 18 million people traveled to play golf in 2003, while only 15 percent of them booked their trips through travel agents. She and partner Connolly - also a travel industry veteran who previously worked for Continental Airlines - are both avid golfers. “It was a combination of passion for golf and experience in the travel industry.”* Who are your customers? Typically, male professionals and retirees have been the primary golf vacationers. They continue to be stable and durable customers. “Even after 9/11, they didnt cancel their golf vacations,” says Van Menxel. She adds that Custom Golf Vacations is seeing strong growth in family golf packages. The companys customers are also travel agents, agencies (such as the Automobile Association of America), and online travel sites (such as Travelocity.com) that use its technology to sell golf vacations.

Put usability first; practice simplicity Scores of books purport to offer insight into successful Web site design. At least one actually does. Jakob Nielsens Designing Web Usability (published by New Rider, Indianapolis) is accessible (with plenty of color plates illustrating his ideas) but dense with practical and sometimes idiosyncratic advice. It is recommended reading for agency principals and Web managers alike. Some people label Nielsen opinionated, but thats his value. His insights are based on experience and experiments, not simply taste and intuition. You can be as clever as you want with your Web site but once you read Nielsen, you may feel like an idiot. Silicon is the second-most-common element on earth, led only by oxygen, and is the second-most abundant element in the Earths crust, where it is chiefly found in the form of silica or silicon dioxide (also called flint). A trace element, silica is critical for healthy: bone; cartilage; organ and connective tissues (aorta, trachea, artery walls, ligaments and tendons); and for beautiful: hair, skin, and nails. Thanks to research by E.M. Carlisle, K. Schwarz, D.B. Milne, A. Charnot, R.H. Monceaux, J. Looper, E.J. Rus, L.C. Kevran, A. Weiss, A.T. Diplock, and others, we now realize that this element exerts a giant influence on our health and life. Edith M. Carlisle, Ph.D., discovered that calcium and vitamin D alone are not sufficient for bone growth, density, strength, and flexibility. Other minerals, including traces of silica, are needed to strengthen bones and increase production of collagen, the tough, flexible connective tissue that binds everything together.

Santa Monica Homes For Sale

WASHINGTON (Bloomberg) — U.S. sales of new homes rose in October to the highest level in three months as low mortgage rates and stock market gains rejuvenated housing activity. “The market is going to remain as strong as its been, which is an incredibly healthy home buying market,” said Lori Steiner, senior vice president of marketing at Dominion Homes in Dublin, Ohio. A rebound of new home sales in the West accounted for the October increase, as sales fell in the other three regions. Including sales of previously owned homes, “the housing market is going to set a third consecutive record this year,” said David Berson, chief economist at Fannie Mae, the worlds leading buyer of single-family home mortgages. Home sales next year “will be extremely strong.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — Americans bought fewer homes in October after snapping them up the month before, while home prices reached record levels, the latest sign of a moderating but still vibrant housing market. The Commerce Department reported Monday that sales of new single- family homes dipped by a smaller-than-expected 2.6 percent in October to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 928,000. “New-home sales held up amazingly well in October,” said David Orr, chief economist for First Union. Some analysts were expecting new-home sales to fall by 4.9 percent.

They streamlined counters, cabinets New lights and light colors brighten thisformerly dark-toned kitchen built in the 70s. Streamlined counters and cabinets offer an uncluttered look and help the remodel blend with the family area it faces. Replacing the original fluorescent ceiling, recessed down lights in a U-shaped soffit shine directly on work areas. In place of a gold and orange color scheme, mat-finish almond-tone plastic laminate covers counters and European-style invisible-hinge cabinets and drawer fronts. Below the counters, more space-efficient drawers replaced cabinets.
KITCHENS: PLAN, REMODEL, BUILD, Creative Homeowner, $19.95, softcover, 255 pages, nearly 400 photos. If done right, a newly remodeled kitchen can add value to your home and create a functional, exciting living space. However, knowing what to remodel and where to start can frustrate even the most accomplished do-it-yourself homeowner. “Kitchens: Plan, Remodel, Build,” by Creative Homeowner, is the perfect tool for homeowners looking to remodel or update their kitchen; covering everything from design, color and layout to demolition and installation.
Lower-than-average counters, toe spaces that are high and deep For anyone using a wheelchair, its essential that rooms have at least a 5- by 5-foot open space so the chair can be turned. To accomplish this, the remodel incorporated space from what had been a separate dining area. Now the kitchen is arranged along three walls; the stove lines up with a kneehole sink. At 33 inches high, most counters in this kitchen are a few inches lower than standard height (the dishwasher is under a regular 36-inch counter). Toe space under all cabinets is an extra-generous 7 1/2 inches high and 8 1/2 inches deep. Next to the ovens, a baking center-pantry can be closed off by doors that slide back into the walls. Open, it has a sturdy pullout maple board at the right height for mixing up a cake or rolling out biscuits. Pots, pans, and some dishes are stored in drawers below the counter. Adjoining the pantry is a built-in wall oven with a microwave underneath. The built-in 47-inch-diameter dining table is 27 inches high. With only a center pedestal, its easy to roll up to. The only space added during the remodel is a 6 1/2- by 12-foot sunroom with double glass doors that slide open to the garden. A long 19-inch-high built-in bench on one wall of the sunroom has a 4-inch foam pad that makes it a great spot for sunny catnaps. PHOTO : Remodeled kitchen works hard for wheelchair independence. The next frontier is worldwide, and the new media are as open-ended as cyberspace. The tremendous growth of the Internet as an advertising medium has been widely documented in a variety of published articles and reports. Although advertisers still invest more than 45 percent of their media budget in newspaper and television, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) estimates that more than $900 million was spent on Internet advertising in 1997 and projects that the end-of-year figures for 1998 will show an expenditure of at least $2 billion. Business Week predicts that ad spending on the Internet will be close to $8 billion by 2002.1 One important reason why revenue is increasing at such a rapid rate is that many ol the more established and popular Web sites are charging more for their ads. In general, advertisers pay for their ads on a “cost per thousand” (CPM) basis, i.e., advertisers pay a fee for every thousand times their ad is viewed. CPM rates for television range from $5 to $6 per thousand. Compare this tc Web site charges: the average cost for banner ads is $17, but more popular sites can charge a premium of $20 to $22 per thousand for access to their visitors. Advertisers pay more for Internet ads because these sites can deliver a more targeted audience.

In the past, unauthorized entry was the biggest threat to building security. As the tragic events of and following Sept. 11, 2001, have made all too clear, threats to security have become more varied and sophisticated. In developing a security program today, facility executives must also consider the threats of bombs and biological and chemical weapons. The results of this assessment will allow facility executives to design and implement security measures in concentric zones, from the interior of the building outward to the public domain.
SECURITY: VOIP is growing so fast that its reportedly leaving network security issues in the dust. A number of computer security experts told NewScientist.com last month that VoIP phones could be vulnerable to a number of familiar-sounding Net threats, from viruses and denial of service attacks to toll fraud, ID spoofing and even eavesdropping. But Vonage CTO Louis Mamakos insists that an attack on a VoIP phone would take an extraordinary amount of determination. For example, he told New Scientist, for VOMIT to work the eavesdropper would have to filter off all other traffic going through the Net and focus in on one call. None of this is impossible, he says. But its much easier to demonstrate these vuinerabilities in the tab.

The solicitors leader, Martin Mears, was forced to back down on fixed fees for conveyancing yesterday, after his opponents seized on advice from the Master of the Rolls that the plan would probably break the law. Instead, he got no more than a commitment to consult members to try to find a way to stop cut-price conveyancing, and was forced into the humiliating step of having to agree to get legal advice from a barrister on all options. The Law Societys ruling council met in London for what had been expected to be a showdown between the old guard and the newly elected Mr Mears, who had stood - with his deputy, Robert Sayers - on a policy of fighting for higher conveyancing fees.
THE TORTUOUS process of buying a home will be over in days rather than months under new rules to be unveiled by the Government this week, in the biggest shake-up of conveyancing this century. Under new legislation, partly aimed at beating “gazumping”, buying property will become more expensive for sellers and cheaper for buyers. Estate agents will not be allowed to market properties unless they have checked that the seller has complied with the new rules.
STEPHEN WARD The solicitors leader, Martin Mears, is planning to get the Law Society to force firms into ending cut-price conveyancing by taking away their insurance cover if they work for less than a recommended scale of fees.

THE father-in-law retired from the health service after over 40 years in the job. But as much as Ive squinted in the past couple of days I figure I still have a good 25 years to go yet.
DefinitionHealth services administration is a phrase that describes the career opportunities for individuals with a college education-often a masters degree-who choose to work in a health-related arena as a manager or administrator. The roles of individuals in health services administration are most commonly site specific but in general include skills in leadership, financial management, health informatics, marketing, and human resources. Because the health field is so diverse, an individual can choose to specialize in one division of a hospital, for example surgery, or in a specialty area in outpatient services such as managing an independent primary care center. An individual who is hired as a surgical health services administrator would function under the direction of either a hospital administrator or a surgeon. Coordination of services for surgical patients, acquisition of supplies, scheduling of surgical procedures, financial billing, and evaluation of quality outcomes would likely be job expectations. For the individual who is hired as a manager of a primary care center, responsibilities might include coordination of the hiring and firing of clerical staff, instituting community outreach, marketing the services of the center within the community, financial planning, and overseeing the billing sequence. In both these examples, the roles are site specific in that the needs of the different types of health services determine what responsibilities logically belong to the administrator.

A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery. “We hope to build around the home improvement theme within the shopping center,” Archiniaco said. “This is a theme that has been proven in many successful specialty shopping centers.”

Radio continues to be an inexpensive way for dealers and suppliers to reach their increasingly mobile customers Last year, the Minnesota-Dakota Hardware Association used $130,000 in co-op funds provided by five companies — Ace Hardware, United Hardware Distributors, TruServ, Briggs Stratton and 3M — for a five-month-long radio campaign extolling the virtues of the independent dealer over its warehouse competitors. Radio, which traces its roots back to the 1870s when it served as a point-to-point wireless telegraph, has survived several technology revolutions and continues to provide a reliable venue for dealers promotional efforts. Its relatively low cost and access to people while they are mobile are making radio a preferred and efficient medium for more companies. At least one study has even found that online dealers, with their cutting-edge approach to marketing and selling, are using radio ambitiously to get their messages out to shoppers.

The next time someone who is not your spouse, lover, or trusted physician asks you to disrobe, spit, or urinate, think twice. And hold on to your wallet or purse. Quackery is going strong on the coattails of alternative medicine and has its own credentials. The healthcare marketplace is fraught with credentials, some legitimate, some overrated, some dubious, and some far afield of science. A bona fide credential is any evidence that one is trustworthy or has authority. However, since authority does not guarantee trustworthiness, whether a credential deserves confidence depends ultimately on whether the tenets that underlie the credential are worthy of confidence. Authority-type healthcare credentials range from the science-based (e.g., podiatric [chiropodist, or foot doctor] licensure) to the controversial (e.g., naturopathic licensure).
Business Editors/Health Medical Writers Access Health has agreed to acquire HealthCare, which had been previously announced and subsequently delayed due to financing issues, in a share exchange for 4 million shares of the common stock of Access Health. The President and Chief Operating Officer of Access Health are shareholders in HealthCare and will receive shares of Access Health upon completion of the acquisition. Based on its unaudited financial statements, HealthCare is believed to have generated revenues of approximately $2 million during 2000, with modest profits. Nursing home care in Utah is improving, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reported Wednesday. Many of those improvements were linked directly by care center administrators to a quality improvement project through HealthInsight, Medicares Quality Improvement Organization in Utah. The organization is part of the national Nursing Home Initiative, which focuses on raising standards of care in nursing homes across the country and giving consumers more comparison information.
